Rehabilitation and Operation of a Water Desalination Plant in Deir al-Balah
A European Union-funded Project to Improve Water Quality and Promote Sustainability
As part of ongoing efforts to enhance access to safe drinking water in the Gaza Strip, Abdul Salam Yassin Company – ETA, with funding from the European Union, successfully implemented a vital project to rehabilitate and operate a water desalination plant in Deir al-Balah, in coordination with the Deir al-Balah Municipality.
The project involved several technical and engineering upgrades, including:
- Infrastructure development of the desalination unit
- Replacement of water filters to ensure higher quality treatment
- Fabrication of a custom-made container, built with weather- and heat-resistant materials to protect the plant and ensure uninterrupted operation under harsh conditions
- Installation of two new public water dispensers to facilitate community access to clean, desalinated water
With a daily production capacity of 40 cubic meters, the plant helps meet the needs of hundreds of families. The exact number of beneficiaries depends on the average per capita water consumption.
The project was executed in under three weeks, and a local team was trained to manage and operate the plant post-delivery—ensuring long-term sustainability and empowering the local community to oversee its own water infrastructure.
